Artist Spotlight - Harmony Malewich

We are thrilled to shine the spotlight on Harmony Malewich, a talented young performer whose passion for musical theater has made her a standout in the local arts community.

Harmony is currently a sophomore at Carthage High School and has been a part of the Carthage School District since first grade. Originally from New Jersey, she has also lived in Georgia, following her family’s military ties. From a young age, Harmony has been a performer at heart, saying, “I’ve always been a dramatic person.” One of her favorite musicals is The Greatest Showman, which reflects her love for theatrical storytelling.

In middle school, Harmony’s love for the stage began to take shape, despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. When she was in 7th grade, she auditioned for her first school musical, James and the Giant Peach Jr., under the direction of Chris Autote, Carthage Middle School’s Chorus teacher. She was cast in the ensemble, which was a turning point for her: “I finally felt like I belonged somewhere. I wasn’t the odd one out because everyone is a weirdo who bursts out into show tunes every two minutes.”

Her talent quickly became clear when she landed the lead role in Moana Jr during 8th grade. Her involvement in musicals even inspired her to join the school chorus, thanks to encouragement from Mr. Autote. Now in 10th grade, Harmony continues to shine. She recently performed a piece from Les Misérables in the Pivot Foundation talent show and dreams of one day taking on a role in Heathers: The Musical, one of her favorite shows.

This past summer, Harmony took a big step in her musical journey by participating in the NYS Summer School of the Arts. Her ambition is to pursue a career in musical theater, where she feels most alive. “There’s something about an audience... that keeps me going,” she shared. However, Harmony also enjoys other creative pursuits, like jewelry-making, and would even consider acting in films. If all else fails, she dreams of becoming a teacher, following in Mr. Autote’s footsteps by encouraging other students to embrace their passion for the arts.

When asked about her favorite subject in school, Harmony reveals that it’s math. “There’s stability in math,” she says, appreciating the balance it brings to her life.

As for advice, Harmony encourages young performers to never give up. If you’re into it, you should go for it, even if you don’t get a great role. “Keep trying even if you don’t get exactly what you want the first time.” She fondly recalls the sense of community she found in her first ensemble role and believes that peer connection is a powerful part of the experience.

This year, Harmony will be taking on a main role in her school play, The Actor’s Nightmare, where she plays Sarah, one of the actresses in the production. The show will be held on November 1st and 2nd at the Carthage High School Auditorium, and it’s sure to be a fantastic performance!
